I Just Want to Hit Something

A high-energy introduction to physical self-defense, roughly 80% hitting and 20% grounding. You learn to strike with power and good mechanics, and simple ways to stay steady and centered. Big energy, real release. It is consistently our most popular short class.

A woman strikes a hand-held pad while her partner holds it steady.

Who it is for

  • Anyone who wants to feel strong. No experience needed. Physical skills are taught so they are accessible to all.
  • People who want the physical side first. This class is low in emotional intensity. For more time on staying calm and setting boundaries with words, try Introduction to Self-Defense for Trauma Survivors.
  • Groups. Book it privately for your team, congregation or group of friends.

What happens in the room

What you practice

1. Opening circle: introductions, group agreements and confidentiality

2. Grounding: a standing circle to settle into your body

3. Awareness stance and ready stance, with your voice

4. Stop-sign hands, footwork and tracking

5. A line drill: turn, face and speak up

6. What if words don't work? Heel-palm strikes and knees, in the air and then on pads

7. A check-in circle

8. Getting to the floor safely, then kicks on strike pads and a training dummy

9. Closing circle: grounding, and what surprised you about yourself

Who: open to the public. Classes are for adults; teens aged 16 and 17 are welcome with a parent or guardian's consent.

Physical level: you set your own pace. You stand, move, use your voice and strike hand-held pads. Kicks from the floor are optional.

No padded, suited instructor in this class. You strike pads and a training dummy, never a person.

Choice: class opens with group agreements, including confidentiality. You can sit out any drill or step out, no reason needed. Trainers ask before any touch. No one has to share a personal story.

Wear: clothes you can move in and closed-toe shoes.

Length: 4 hours. Public classes are offered year-round at an arranged venue; join the class list to hear the next dates.
